Young Scholar Awards Program
 

The Sponsoring Societies of Pacifichem 2010 are making available up to 40 travel grants for chemistry professionals from developing countries within the Pacific Basin. The grants include $US2,500 plus complimentary Congress registration and hotel stay to cover travel and attendance costs. Please read the following information carefully.

The closing date for receipt of applications is 1 April 2010.

 

The Pacifichem Young Scholar Awards are available to encourage attendance by young chemistry professionals from developing countries that border the Pacific Ocean, who might not otherwise be able to attend the conference. Each awardee will receive:

     • $US 2,500
     • complimentary Congress registration
     • complimentary hotel stay for 5 nights of the meeting
     • a Young Scholar certificate

Young Scholars and Student Poster Awardees will be honored at a special Pacifichem Awards Luncheon on Sunday, December 19, 2010, during the meeting.

The closing date for applications is 1 April 2010. The Organizing Committee hopes to announce the Pacifichem 2010 Young Scholars by 1 May 2010.

Eligible Pacific Basin Countries:
Nationals of the following countries are eligible to apply for a Young Scholar Award.

East Asia & Pacific: American Samoa; Cambodia; Fiji; Indonesia;Kiribati; Korea, Dem. Rep.; Lao PDR; Malaysia; Marshall Islands; Micronesia, Fed. Sts.; Mongolia; Myanmar (Burma); Palau; Papula New Guinea; Philippines; Russia; Singapore; Samoa; Solomon Islands; Thailand; Timor-Leste; Tonga; Vanuatu; and Vietnam

Americas: Argentina; Brazil; Chile; Columbia; Costa Rica; Ecuador; El Salvador; Guatemala; Honduras; Mexico; Nicaragua; Panama; Peru

South Asia:  Bangladesh; Bhutan; Maldives; Nepal; Sri Lanka

Summary of Information and Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Up to 40 Young Scholar Awards will be awarded for Pacifichem 2010 each carrying a grant of $US 2,500 + complimentary congress registration + complimentary hotel stay for 5 nights.
  2. The closing date for receipt of application is 1 April 2010.
  3. Applicants for a "Young Scholar Award” must be 40 years of age or less on 31 December 2010.
  4. Applicants must be a chemistry professional working in any developing country that borders the Pacific Ocean [see list above].
  5. Applicants must be in their first permanent position in an educational institution, government agency, or other non profit organization as a professional chemist or related science discipline.
  6. Applicants must be the principal author and presenter of a paper that has been accepted for presentation at Pacifichem 2010. [Awards are conditional upon paper submission and acceptance.]
  7. Applications should be submitted with a transmittal letter, which states that the application is for “Young Scholar Award”, and be accompanied by the following:

A 500-1000 word abstract. NOTE: The required Congress online abstract must also be completed and submitted per the instructions on the Pacifichem website for abstract submissions.

Curriculum vitae that includes any chemical society membership(s) and a list of scientific publications (include papers accepted for publication but not yet in print)

DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF APPLICATIONS IN THE USA IS 1 APRIL 2010

Awards will be made upon recommendation from a panel of Professors of Chemistry selected from universities in Pacific Basin countries. The results will be sent to applicants on or before May 1, 2010.
