Advances in the Medicinal Applications of N-Heterocyclic Carbene Metal Complexes and Azolium Cations (#255)

Over the past decade, investigations focusing on the application of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHCs) metal complexes as an innovative class of ligands for metallopharmaceutical synthesis have grown at a rapid pace. The excellent stability of NHC metal complexes and their vast potential for chemical modification make them ideal candidates for such applications. A closely related and often linked field of research is that of azolium cations. Azolium cations serve as the precursors to metal NHC complexes and have been shown to possess their own intriguing medical properties. Research in both fields includes the use of these chemical species as novel broad spectrum antimicrobials and anticancer agents. The focus of this symposium will be on the medicinal applications of NHCs and azolium cations. The topics to be covered in the symposium will include the synthesis, characterization, and activity studies of medicinal NHCs and azolium cations.
