Chemicals of Emerging Environmental Concern: A Global Perspective (#19)

This session will explore current globally important chemicals of concern and address chemicals that pose risks in air, soil or water across broad geographic regions. A host of compound classes fall into this category including brominated aromatics, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, a wide variety of natural toxins, reemerging legacy compounds that are used for disease vector control, hazardous constituents of e-waste, nanomaterials, and newer classifications of pesticides such as pyrethroids and neonicotinoids. Presenters will also evaluate the scope of emerging contaminants in different geographic regions. While regulations may have curbed certain chemical uses in some regions, there may be reasons that the use of these compounds continues or is increasing in areas experiencing rapid development or rapid population growth. Thus emerging concerns may have vastly different meanings across the Pacific Region and globally.
