The focus of this symposium will be an interdisciplinary study of the chemistry of water disinfection and environmental contaminant treatment (ECT) using ultraviolet light, with an emphasis on practical solutions to safeguard water ecosystems and drinking water supplies. Topics to be considered are UV treatment of emerging contaminants of water such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products, analytical techniques for detection of trace contaminants to gauge the effectiveness of UV treatment, and the use of chemistry for the detection of pathogens in water using "lab-on-a-chip" technologies. The use of advanced oxidation agents with UV for environmental contamination treatment will also be considered, as well as regulation of these contaminants. This symposium will bring together the leading scientists in both industry and universities to address this topic of great environmental interest. Partial list of invited speakers: Dr. Karl G. Linden, University of Colorado - Boulder, USA. Dr. Mihaela Stefan and Mr. Alan Royce, Trojan Technologies, Canada Dr. Ajit Sarmah, Landcare Research, Hamilton New Zealand. Dr. Wenjun Liu, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. Dr. Martha Wells, Tennessee Technological University, USA.
